Change in performer and programme for the Chapel Concert on 1st December

Unfortunately Kitty Whately has had to withdraw from this concert but we are very grateful to the fine young baritone Ben Nelson from English National Opera, who has agreed to give an enticing programme of Schumann and Vaughan Williams.

Hailed by Rupert Christiansen in the Daily Telegraph as Best Newcomer in his “Opera Highlights of 2009”, British baritone Benedict Nelson is one of the most exciting singers of his generation and has attracted comparisons with Gerald Finley and Simon Keenlyside among others. Born in London, Nelson studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio. In 2007 he won second prize in both the Kathleen Ferrier Awards and the Guildhall Gold Medal at the young age of 23. Currently he is an inaugural English National Opera Harewood Artist.

Review of Britten Birthday Concert

Our celebrations of the centenary of Benjamin Britten's birth culminated in a concert on 23rd November in which the musicians were Natalie Clein, the Carducci Quartet, Michael Chance and Julius Drake. The concert included Gordon Crosse's "Blyth Postcards," a piece newly commissioned by Norfolk and Norwich Chamber Music to celebrate the centenary, as well as music by Purcell, Dowland, Schubert, Bridge and of course Britten himself. The concert was reviewed by Christopher Smith in the Eastern Daily Press on 25th November. He begins... “Norfolk and Norwich Chamber Music did Britten proud with a Hundredth Birthday Tribute lasting nearly three and a half hours.” He goes on to comment favourably on the performances of the individual pieces.

Change of access route to car park at John Innes Centre

Those who have recently attended concerts at the John Innes Centre will have noticed that building work has been taking place. As a result of this the access route to the car park is being changed with immediate effect. The Conference Centre Manager has kindly provided us with the following guide:

1. Please enter the John Innes site from the Colney Lane traffic lights either by turning left from NNUH/Cringleford or right from the Earlham/Watton Road. This is the same as before.

2. Unless you are loading/unloading or are a Blue Badge holder (see 5 below), please DO NOT DRIVE STRAIGHT DOWN THE HILL AS YOU HAVE BEFORE. There is no entry to the car park from here. If this happens in error then you will have to circle the roundabout (next to John Innes Centre main reception) and drive back up to the top of the hill. Instead turn right immediately upon leaving the traffic lights.

3. Then immediately turn left into what is the top of the old car park that you have used many times before.

4. There is a new car park further into the site that you can use if the old car park becomes full.

5. For loading/unloading or for Blue Badge parking you should drive straight down the hill as before.

Car parking remains free of charge for those attending our concerts (outside normal working hours) and there should be ample spaces available.

The Royal Philharmonic Society's annual awards for live classical music have recently been announced and Steven Osborne was the winner in the Instrumentalist category. His un-showy brilliance, integrity, and very wide repertoire have long marked him out, but what now emerges most strongly is the unique magic of his sound combined with a profound musical intelligence.” He will be appearing in a concert at the John Innes Centre on 15th February 2014 and (together with Jean Johnson) at the Chapel the following day.
